How the Kickstart Scheme can help you launch a career

Throw into the mix the ever-challenging COVID-19 situation and you have a real uphill battle to get your foot in the door. 

At hundo we know it is becoming increasingly difficult to find suitable employment, with multiple people applying for the same role and some jobs just disappearing in the ‘new normal’. We have always helped young people who are just entering the workforce and are working double-hard to make sure we can continue doing so in these strange times. 

So, with that in mind, we are looking to help young people utilise the new Kickstart scheme as a launchpad into your career. 

A scheme for young people

That is where the new Kickstart Scheme comes in. The Kickstart Scheme is a government-funded initiative, helping companies with the opportunity to offer six-month paid placements to young people aged 16-24. Recent reports have shown that over 500 employers have already signed up to take part in the scheme!

This scheme is set to open doors for young people who would previously have found taking part in a work placement scheme inaccessible, we know that most of these 500 employers would not be in a position to hire if it was not for the scheme so we are going to make the most of it! So should you! 

What makes it special?

For far too long, work placements were associated with free labour. Too often you’d see Dave from accounting’s nephew making teas for 3 weeks in the guise of ‘accruing transferable skills’. This is helpful to no-one, except maybe Dave from accounting’s own standing with his in-laws. 

Even when the actual experience is good, you are developing many transferable skills, but transferable skills are not paying the bills!  As a result, many young people avoid these ‘work placements’ in favour of casual work that actually pays! We don’t blame you. 

With the Kickstart Scheme, the government will help with your wages in all of the roles available. This will ensure that you receive fair compensation for the hard work that you put in. So why not use this opportunity to look at jobs or companies you may have never thought were accessible before. We are here to help you do that! 

Career goals?

So, it is only six-months and you are not getting rich in six months. But, look at it as just the start. We want you to set goals for those six months and use them as a launchpad to get into a great career. For example, we want you to be able to find a placement that matches your future career goals, meaning that it can help you gain the necessary skills and qualities you need to find full-time employment in their chosen sector once the placement has ended.

So the worst-case scenario is, you have six-months of pay in your pocket and some meaningful experience on that CV, come back to Hundo and we can get you moving. The best case is you shoot the lights out and are made full-time before you know it and can talk about how this was the start of your meteoric rise in the industry.
